Albanella

Located on the side of a beautiful green valley, the town of Albanella offers its visitors an attractive panoramic view, which embraces the coastline and the Alburni Mountains at the same time. Its origins date back to the 9th century. when some refugees from Paestum found refuge in this area, thus avoiding the Saracen invasions, but the discovery of tombs, dating from around the end of the 5th century. BC, testify the presence of a Greek urban settlement, whose people practiced specialized forms of culture. In the locality of San Nicola, belonging to the town, the remains of a rural sanctuary came to light which, together with the clay and votive statues, witness the cult of the fertility goddess of the countryside. In the same locality the remains of a farm, dating back to the III century. a.C., and a coin of the Emperor Aurelio, which ascertains the population of the area even in the late Roman age. The only documented information on the Longobard, Norman and Swabian ages is contained in the Angioini registers: the oldest document dates back to 1266, referring to the the Capaccio conspiracy. For those who love the natural beauty, Albanella counts among its tourist attractions several parks and woods, such as the 111 hectares of natural protection oasis of the Bosco Camerine and the Parco della Giunta di Sele and Calore. It is also possible to admire the river Calore, with the two tributaries: the Cosa, along the banks of which "harbor" animals in danger of extinction, and the Malnome and, last but not least, the Collina della Difesa Cigno with its 5 hectares of land planted with pine trees. until the last decades of the 18th century.
