Caselle in Pittari

Caselle in Pittari is a charming town located among the hills of Busseto, at an altitude of 450 m above sea level; it is located just 15 km away from the Gulf of Policastro, and is surrounded by natural beauties such as the renowned Mount Bulgheria, the sacred Mount Gelbison, the Cervati forest and the lush Bussento and Mingardo valleys. It has very ancient origins as evidenced by the important archaeological area of Laurelli. Its name derives from the Latin-medieval language, and literally means "small houses on the stony mountain", to indicate the first, settlement. It was a town built in a clearly defensive position, being hidden from view by the San Michele and Panel Mountains. The village could count on solid walls, and on a castle, of which a majestic cylindrical tower remains, which dominates the built-up area and what once were prisons. It came under Norman and then Swabian dominion after the War of the Vespers (1282-1302). In the XIV century, the town hosted over a hundred families and was the most populated town in the middle course of the river Bussento. In that period, it became part of the possessions of the Sanseverino Family and, in the following centuries, many other lords succeeded to dominate the town until the subversion of the feudality that saw Caselle become an autonomous municipality. The name "in Pittari" was added to Caselle, after the unification of Italy.
