Agricultural center of the middle Valle del Calore, situated on a hill on the slopes of Mount Vesole, Castel San Lorenzo has Lombard origins dating back to the foundation of the monastery of S. Lorenzo de strictu, in the 12th century, by Guaimario III of Capaccio. He donated the monastery numerous lands, where the first residential areas of the original settlement were built, under the jurisdiction of the Benedictine Monks. In the following centuries, the fiefdom has been dominated by several families including the Carafa, who ruled for a long time.
Following the administrative subdivision of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, from 1811 to 1860 Castel San Lorenzo became part of the district of Roccadaspide, belonging to the Campagna District; with the Unity of Italy and up until the year 1927, during the Reign, Castel San Lorenzo was still part of the territory of Roccadaspide.
