Controne

The Municipality of Controne is located at the foot of the Alburni Mountains, and falls within the territory of the National Park of Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni. Its name derives from “contra-elion”, to indicate its position located on the opposite point from the one where the sun rises. The origins of this small town of the Alburni are very ancient and the first settlement can be attributed to some inhabitants of Paestum that where exiled following the occupation of the town by the Sibarites.
Originally, the town was located downstream, in the locality of Pezza; it was only in 1294 that the inhabitants of Controne moved higher up, in a safer place, around the Abbey of S. Nicola di Bari, after Frederick II of Swabia had reduced their houses to a pile of rubble.
Some findings of pieces of worked marble, coins and medals of the Greek era attest the ancient origins of the town
In addition, coins made in Roman or velina make us think that Controne also had commercial traditions.
There were also found canals with lead pipes of an ancient aqueduct that carried the drinking waters of the Acquaviva spring and other surrounding springs.
The country is home to the Controne bean, still cultivated following old customs.
Controne bean is characterized by a small and round shape, a very white color and a high digestibility. The famous Festival of the Controne bean, which takes place in the Cilentan municipality during the month of November, is dedicated to the Contronese product, one of the most appreciated of the typical products of the Cilento gastronomy and in general of the whole Campania.
