Sessa Cilento

The first news of a "Locum Sessa" dates back to 1187, while only in 1258 there is talk of a "Casale Sessa". The village was a fief of the Capano family, princes of Pollica, to whom it remained tied until the last century, when it became an autonomous municipality.
The fraction of S. Mango, much older, in 994 was included in its territory four Churches: San Primo di Cannicchio, San Fortunato, Santa Maria di Campo Rubro, Santa Maria dei Pioppi and San Marco, the "Laura" which was located on Mount Stella and that, then, in the XV century. it was named after S. Maria della Stella.
The monastery of S. Magno, of which today only the ruins remain, was the very heart of this town. This monastery greatly influenced the economic life of Sessa Cilento, in fact its flourishing economy meant that in 1093 it gathered around it one of the most numerous communities of the Cilento, with as many as ninety-five families.
