Stella Cilento

Located in the heart of Cilento, the municipality of Stella Cilento is fully included in the perimeter of the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park and, in addition to the main center, it includes the hamlets of Amalafede , Guarazzano, S. Giovanni and Droro. Originally, and until 1871, the ancient village was called Porcili, a Greek term that literally means "in front of the Lord", referring to its privileged position on the Monte della Stella. The first document in which the toponym appears for dates back to 1038, while in another, dating back to 1187, the locality called “Serra di Porcili” is mentioned. As for the origins of the town, historians have not yet reached a concordant opinion: according to some they date back to Roman times, according to others it was the inhabitants of Torricelle who occupied the area, taking refuge on the slopes of Mount Stella, to escape the incursions of the Vandals . Porcili was merged with the Barony of Cilento and, then, it was returned, in 1276, to Ruggiero Sanseverino. It belonged to the Capanos, only to return to the Sanseverinos who had to sell it again due to the Congiura dei Baroni. There followed alternate events that saw Casale di Porcili pass from one family to another, until reaching the hands of the Ventimiglias who, from 1761, owned it until 1806.
