Located inside the spectacular Calore Valley, in a spectacular hilly landscape at the foot of Mount Ausinito, this small town was founded by a group of Basilian monks fleeing from East, in the VIII-IX century. They founded two important monasteries: one called of Sant'Arcangelo di Campora and the other of San Vito di Fogna (Villa Littorio), in the employ of the great Basilian Abbey of Santa Maria di Rofrano. Around the convents, shepherds and peasants gathered: they were engaged in plowing the lands to adapt them to the cultivation of vines, olive trees, and legumes.
From 1363, the Valle dell’Angelo came under the jurisdiction of the Abbey of Cava; it fell under the jurisdiction of Laurino until the abolition of feudalism. In 1571 the hamlets of Valle and Piaggine obtained their independance from Laurino.
Since the early '700s in Valle dell'Angelo, ideals of freedom and anxieties of renewal began to spread and, in 1799, the Tree of Freedom was raised. The enthusiasm generated by the ideals of freedom was diminishing when the Republicans began to carry out acts of violence that degenerated into anarchy.
With the Unity of Italy the economic situation of the farmhouse went worse; the land issue remained unsolved, and the condition of the peasant class worsened, fueling a massive migration phenomenon.
